Ninth Heaven to Ninth Hell: The History of a Noble Chinese Experiment
By Huai-Lu Chin, Qin Huailu, William Hinton

    * Publisher:   Barricade Books
    * Number Of Pages:   665
    * Publication Date:   1995-06
    * ISBN-10 / ASIN:   1569800413
    * ISBN-13 / EAN:   9781569800416

Product Description:

This is the dramatic story of Chen Yonggui and his community, Dazhai, where he developed an agrarian collective which Mao Zedong hailed as a model for the reconstruction of all rural china.

But Ninth Heaven To Ninth Hell is not just the story of an incredible success, it is also the account of a heart-rending tragedy. For after the death of Mao, his successor, Deng Xioping, reversed the aim of China's revolutionary course. Deng rejected Mao's collective road and instead embarked on a free-market "Socialism with Chinese characteristics."

Summary: Important defence of a maligned epoch
Rating: 4

The manuscript of this book had to be smuggled out of China, where the reactionary government suppressed its publication. Today's Chinese "Communist" Party viciously slanders the achievements of collective agriculture in the community Dazhai and the visionary leader Chen Yonggui who helped to make it a success. Yet thousands of people, both Chinese and foreign, saw for themselves the development of this once backward village into a thriving, highly productive agricultural community. It prospered until the early 1980s, when it was forcibly disbanded by the central government. The effects of decollectivisation were dramatic and criminal: in 1987, Dazhai, formerly a prosperous collective, was not able to feed itself.

Qin Huailu is to be applauded for having the courage to record this important period of history in the face of oppression by the current counterrevolutionary régime. The accomplishments of Chen Yonggui and Dazhai will not be forgotten.

SHENFAN - A fascinating study in Chinese sociology..., February 12, 2007
By     Isaac Ho (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hi, this is a fascinating and illuminating book by Mr. William Hinton. Though he is not a sociologist nor sinologist but a techician, yet his study of this village in China is a landmark and distinctive achievement. This is a sequel to his first study, entitled: Fanshan - A documentary history in a Chinese village in the Shansi Province of southwestern China soon after the socialist revolution led by Mao & Co.
I have had both books. And I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending to readers who are interested in village life and how the farmers cope with the revolution and land reform in modern China.
Hinton selected the Long Bow Village in Shansi for his indepth and penetrating study which ultimately become the basis of his two unusual books:- Fanshen (meaning Turn Over) and the sequel Shenfan (Deep turn over).
His brilliant analysis has been so accurate and objective that his two books have been well-received and highly appreciated in China.
Mr. Zhou Enlai, the Chinese premier played a decisive role in helping Hinton when he needed to do research to write his second book, Shenfan.
Due to ideological suspcion in the 1960s, and soon after the Korean War and at the height of Cold War between the East and West, it was not easy for a foreigner, especially an American like William Hinton to get a visa into China and stayed on to study the inhabitants of the Long Bow Village. Hence, the political intervention of Zhou Enlai was necessary in order for Hinton to conduct his sociological study in peace and with the necessary cooperation from the cadres as well as the villagers which trusted and respected him.
These two books by Mr. William Hinton, FANSHEN and SHENFAN is highly readable, devoid of political jargons and purely based on keen observations of the day-to-day activities of the simple but contented farmers in and around Long Bow Village and its surrounding environments.
These villagers are ordinary folks with their difficulties, familes to feed, contributions by way of grains to donate to the state, their fears, hopes, private ambitions and hardworking. They are, according to William Hinton's analysis, the same with other villagers and farmers all over the world. In other words, they are just normal human beings with the need to farm to survive and to celebrate their occasional festivals - marriage, birth, death and getting along with one another.
So go for these two illuminated books which will offer any interested reader of things Chinese, a marvellous insight into the life and living of these simple farmers and how they cope with politics of the day - as it is applicable today when China is on the verge of becoming both an economic and (peaceful) military superpower...respected and feared by both friends and foes alike. Cheers.

Product Description:

The Paris Commune was the biggest and last popular revolution in Western Europe. The short-lived commune and its subsequent repression exposed deep divisions in French society. This book is an account of those times.

Summary: The Lessons of the Paris Commune
Rating: 4

When one studies the history of the Paris Commune of 1871 one can learn something new even though from the perspective of revolutionary strategy the Communards made virtually every mistake in the book. Nevertheless, one can still learn lessons from those experiences and measure mistakes of the Communards against the experience acquired by later revolutionary struggles and above all by later revolutions, not only the successful Russian Revolution of October 1917 but the failed German, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Chinese and Spanish revolutions in the aftermath of World War I. More contemporaneously we also have the experiences of the partial victories of the later Chinese, Cuban and Vietnamese revolutions in the post-World War II period.

Notwithstanding the contradictory nature of the later revolutions cited above, and as if to show that history is not always totally a history of horrors against the fate of the masses, militants today proudly honor the Paris Commune as a beacon of the socialist revolution. It is just for that reason that Karl Marx fought tooth and nail in the First International to defend it against the rage of capitalist Europe and faint-hearted elements in the European labor movement. It is truly one of the revolutionary peaks.

The Commune however also presented in embryo the first post-1848 Revolution instance of the crisis of revolutionary leadership of the international labor movement. That is, the need for a revolutionary party to lead the working class to victory. Placing the problems facing the Commune in this context made me realize that this crisis of revolutionary leadership really has a much longer lineage that I had previously recognized. I had previously placed its start at the collapse of the Socialist International at the beginning of World War I when most European socialist parties took a defensist position toward their own governments by voting for war credits. Unfortunately, the leadership question is still to be resolved.

Many working class tendencies, Anarchist, Anarcho-Syndicalist, Left Social Democratic, Communist and Left Communist justifiably pay homage to the defenders of the Paris Commune and claim its traditions. Why does an organization of short duration and subject to savage reprisals still command our attention? The Commune shows us the heroism of the working masses, their capacity to unite for action, their capacity to sacrifice themselves in the name of a future, more just, organization of society. Every working class tendency can honor those qualities, particularly when in some cases they are far removed from any active need to do more than pay homage to the memory of the fallen Communards.

Nevertheless, to truly honor the Communards it is necessary to understand that along with its positive qualities at the same time the Commune shows us the many times frustrating incapacity of the masses to act in their objective interests, their indecision in the leadership of the movement, their almost always fatal desire to halt after the first successes. Obviously, only a revolutionary party sure of itself and of its program can provide that kind of leadership in order fight against these negative trends. At that stage in the development of the European working class where political class consciousness was limited to the vanguard, capitalism was still capable of progressive expansion and other urban classes were at least verbally espousing socialist solutions it is improbable that such a mass organization could have been formed. Nevertheless such an organization was objectively necessary to seize and, more importantly, to hold power.

It is a truism in politics, including revolutionary politics, that timing is important and many times decisive. As many commentators have noted, seizure of power by the Commune came too late. It had all the possibilities of taking the power on September 4, 1870 rather than March 18, 1871 and that would have permitted the proletariat of Paris to place itself at the head of the workers of the whole country in their struggle. At the very least it would have allowed time for the workers of other cities and the peasantry in the smaller towns and villages to organize their forces for action in defense of Paris and to create their own communes. Unfortunately the Parisian proletariat had neither a party, nor leaders forged by previous struggles who could or would reach out to the rest of France.

Moreover, a revolutionary workers' party, while entirely capable of using parliamentary methods is not, and should not, be a machine for parliamentary wrangling. In a revolution to rely solely on such activity amounts to parliamentary cretinism. One can think of the role of the Mensheviks and Social Revolutionaries after the February Revolution in Russia in 1917. In Paris the Central Committee of the National Guard, the embodiment of organizational power and in effect the prototype for a Workers' Council or Soviet, had more than its share of such wrangling and confusionist politics.

In contrast, a revolutionary party is the accumulated and organized experience of the proletariat. It is only with the aid of the party, which rests upon the whole history of its past, which foresees theoretically the road forward, all its stages, and knows how to act in the situation, that the proletariat avoids making the same historical mistakes, overcomes its hesitations, and acts decisively to seize power. Needless to say those same qualities are necessary to retain power against the inevitable counter-revolutionary onslaught. The proletariat of Paris did not have such a party. The result was that the revolution broke out in their very midst, too late, and Paris was encircled. Like other revolutionary opportunities six months delay proved fatal. Capitalism cruelly exacted its revenge. That is the great lesson of the Commune.
Read this book for more such insights.

The Nanjing Massacre: A Japanese Journalist Confronts Japan's National Shame (Studies of the Pacific Basin Institute)
By Katsuichi Honda, Frank Gibney

Product Description:

This book is based on four visits to China between 1971 and 1989 by Honda Katsuichi, an investigative journalist for Asahi Shimbun. His aim is to show in pitiless detail the horrors of the Japanese Army's seizure and capture of Nanjing in December 1937. Unvarnished accounts of the testimony - Chinese victims and Japanese perpetrators - to the rape and slaughter are juxtaposed with public relations announcements of the Japanese Army as printed in various Japanese newspapers of the time. The bland announcements of triumphant victories stand in bitter contrast to the atrocities that actually took place on the scene. The story unfolds with horrible detail as we watch the triumphant progress of the Japanese army whose troops were bent on rape and killing in the so-called "heat of battle." Yet by recalling the testimony of Japanese soldiers and reporters who were on the scene, as well as reproducing dispatches by Japanese Army authorities at the time, Honda makes it clear that the atrocities were part of a studied effort directed by the Japanese high command to impress the Chinese people with the power of its army and the folly of resistance to it - the estimate of 300,000 killed in these "military operations" is no exaggeratoin. Honda has worked with other Japanese journalists and scholars who have attempted to reveal the truth of the Nanjing massacre, provoked by the efforts of right-wing Japanese, including, sadly, many government officials, to whitewash the whole incident, even to the point of contending that a "massacre" never happened. This gripping account of the atrocities and cover-up joins other exposes - Chinese and now German - in keeping alive the memory of this shameful event.

Summary: A Courageous Japanese Journalist Tells The Truth About Japan's 1937 Crimes Against Humanity
Rating: 5

In Japan Honda Katsuichi has been revered as among his country's finest journalists in print media. But sadly, his excellent journalism pertaining to the horrific acts committed by Imperial Japanese military forces against helpless Chinese prisoners of war and civilians during the three month-long campaign in late 1937 and early 1938 that led to the fall of Nanking (Nanjing) - then the Republic of China's capital - has been ignored or harshly criticized (or both) by his fellow Japanese, who still cling stubbornly to the historical fiction that they too, were victims, because of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I have a question for those Japanese - including several previous Amazon.com reviewers who've demonstrated that they are delusional - who still deny the great, wanton crimes against humanity inflicted upon Asians, Americans and Europeans by the Empire of Japan in its ruthless attempt to create a "Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" in the 1930s and 1940s. Why do you think the United States felt compelled to use the atom bomb against Japan? Could one of the reasons be the savage, genocidal war which Japan's military forces waged against the Chinese from 1937 to 1945? In stark contrast, Germany, Austria, and Italy have atoned for their crimes against humanity. When will Japan's elected government make the same admission?).

Honda Katsuichi's "The Nanjing Massacre" isn't an easy book to read, since it is replete with many eyewitness accounts, by Chinese survivors whom Honda interviewed personally in the 1970s and 1980s, that provide clear, compelling evidence of countless acts of genocide by Japanese military forces against the Chinese, and especially, brutal treatment of civilians, including, most infamously, raping adult women and girls, and sexual molestation such as stabbing them in their vaginas with bayonets and swords. It is a better, far more accurate, book than Iris Chang's justly celebrated "The Rape of Nanking", since it shows that Japanese acts of genocidal brutality did not begin with the fall of Nanking in mid December, 1937, but instead, started as soon as Japanese troops waded ashore at Hangzhou Bay, more than a month before. This American edition also includes excerpts from previous and more recent books written by Honda on Japanese military atrocities during the campaign to take Nanking, as well as revealing excerpts from the diaries of Japanese soldiers who were guilty of committing these crimes. If nothing else, Honda's books ought to be required reading in Japanese classrooms, and the English translation of this book may one day compel the Japanese government to atone for the genocidal actions of its military forces - most notably the Imperial Japanese Army - in the 1930s and 1940s.

Summary: japanese= devil race
Rating: 5

Japan has committed some of the world's worst atrocities in history (nanking massacre, unit 731, batton death march, comfort women, pearl harbor, ect..) and they still refuse to apologize, compensate, or make an accurate history in there textbooks. Why is Japan so cowardly and instead try to make their amends to their victims of the horrible crimes against humanity. No wonder people call Japan a "devil" race.

Summary: Putting things into perspective
Rating: 3

In response to the reviewer below, I must say that it isn't true that 99.9% of the Japanese do not know about the "rape of Nanjing," or that Japan has not apologized at all. We do know it and it's in our history textbooks as well, granted that we are not taught that part of history as much in detail as those in China or Korea. The Japanese government has also apologized on numerous occasions, the question of their sincerity aside. Partly abetted by the nationalist trend that is currently on the rise in Japan, a handful of historians are attempting to rewrite the history; however, it is absolutely wrong that the whole nation is completely ignorant of the matter. Any attempt to appeal to sensationalism or fervent patriotism just adds fuel to the fire.
As for the book in question, this is a pretty good traversal of the matter, though some call into question the impartiality of the evidence employed.

Summary: Japanese does not apologize at all!

I have to tell you that I am Korean and as people know we hate Japanese! Japan still state that the Japanese have not killed any Korean and Chinese and 99.99% of the population does not know anything about the horrible torture they did on Korea and China! Also, the Japanese states that Dokdo is their land when it has been owned by Korea for more than 6 centuries! So stop pretending to be apologizing Japan! You guys did that 5 times already! We won't get fooled agaiN!

Summary: Detractors Blinded by Hate
Rating: 5

This is one of several books detailing the atrocities Japan committed in China during WWII, atrocities the Japanese and their government have yet to face up to in a mature and honest manner. I suppose, for Japan, it's a matter of losing face, and if that's so, Japan has a lot face to lose. Those who deny the Nanjing butchery are so blinded by their hate of communism that any truth exposed by anyone who even minutely appears to support China's view is instantly shrugged off as a lie(s). The bottom line is, the Nanjing Massacre and other Japanese atrocities are about as untrue as the existence of the Comfort Women (Chinese and Korean women kidnapped by Japanese soldiers so as to whore themelves among the Japanese military), and the Bataan Death March where so many American and British military and civilians were murdered along the long walk to Japanese POW camps, none of which Japan has yet to come to terms with either. In fact, the Japanese government even refuses to discuss the Comfort Women.
Those who deny Japan's responsibilty are the same kind we in the west refer to as revisionists when they say the Holocaust never happened. They're not revisionsists; they're liars. A few of the reviews of this book are so full of philosophical and political claptrap that it reminds one of a cheap hamburger loaded with filler. Unfortunatley, the burger is so full of God-knows-what that instead of pleasing the customer with its juicy full rounded appearance, one distasteful bite and you instantly realize you're about to throw up.

Summary: Interesting but has its limit
Rating: 4

I read it since recently I finished reading several books deal with The second empire, Fraco-Prussia war and Paris. Yes, I needed some alternative opinion on the Commune.Each invective Marx pours at Thiers, Napoleon III and corrupted Bourgeoisie is penetrating. Especially his opinion on Bismarck and how he helped to put down Paris Commune shows Marx's brilliance evaluation of the international relationship and political current that apparently stemmed the tide of the revolution. The polemic conveyed by Marx is lucid and spellbouding as usual and it is not doubtful that Marx actually respected the courage of Parisians who revolted against the corrupted regime of little Napoleon in spite of the fact that there are only handful of follwers of Marx and majority of Communards were followers of Proudhon and Blanqui.

My complaints is that majority of French people at that time were not proletarians and the rural populations were generally hostile to Communards.therefore , Marx's hypothesis of taking Versaille by storm was not completely feasible. Lenin's disparagement on Plekhanov can be revoked by same logic. Could the revolution of 1905 topple Czarist regime? It's highly doubtful.

Summary: Stands the Test of Time
Rating: 5

The most masterful political examination in understanding the working of state power and the state apparatus that reinforces control over the working class and popular movements. Marx's work is visionary as he depicts the foundation of state power in anachronistic but powerful forces in civil society that began under the monarchical system of rule. So much of this work is relevant to twenty-first century politics as the remnants of older regimes stymie the development of a broader class-based movement of working people. The residual system of fudalism sets back class struggles as do the ever-present penchant for state support for the ruling class that is unrelenting under capitalism.

The democratic road to socialism is clearly on the horizon, but even as socialist democracy takes its roots, it is the capitalist system that undermines the programs through utiizing military and political force to defend its class interest. So we are indeed back at square one--can the bourgeois democratic regime be reformed or must it be overthrown. State repression is in itself undemocratic as is the capitalist process of labor relations that create class antagonisms that give rise to moves for popular democracy at work and in the community.

Indeed it is the ruling class that is found to be anti-democratic--but finds ample use of democratic language to reinforce its ideological power. Even before there is a debate between Bernstein and Lenin, we are treated to how state power--inured with the guise of democracy--represses workers and peasants--and is in fact the bastion for plutocratic control over society.

Marx's CIVIL WAR IN FRANCE: THE PARIS COMMUNE stands the test of time and is a crucial source for understanding the staying-power of repressive bourgeois governments in the face of neoliberalism and crackdown against popular forces.

Summary: A mixed bag, but enough good articles in here to make it worth the purchase
Rating: 4

This book on the Paris Commune begins with the following words: "The history, the psychology, and the improvisations of the Commune will be compelling in the present period for any American reader disturbed by signs of constitutional crisis in the United States: to persons who se a century's growth in the scope and power of the presidency approach monarchical or fascistic proportion in the police, espionage, and war-making powers of that office; who see effected an unprecedented practical independence of the executive branch of government from the safeguards of traditional checks and balances by Congress and no less by the press; who see the role and responsibility of the elected representatives of the people gravely diminished as a great discussions of war and purse are veiled from concurrent public discussion; or who ask...how can a citizen make his government accountable to the nation's primary values and responsive to critics both internally and publicly."

The catch is that this book was released for the 100th anniversary of the Commune, and those words were written in 1971. So this book is either a bit dated, or frighteningly relevant again, depending on how you look at it.

This book contains 21 short articles on the Commune by 21 different authors, differing widely in content, focus, and quality. And as is often true with these collaborative books, I don't have the energy to review every article separately, and yet it is hard to focus them as a whole.

As this was 1971, many of the articles compare the Commune to the May 68 revolution. Also a lot is made of the Commune's ideological importance in Soviet Russia and communist China.

All of the articles in this book can be described as generally left of center, although within that designation they differ widely, from unapologetic revolutionary sentiment to an article on "The Failure of Revolution". ("The students and their followers were just strong enough to provoke their enemies into repressing them, thus assuring a stronger power base for the state they had hoped to destroy.")

Some of these articles were extremely interesting, like one about the reaction to the Paris Commune in the United States. (Did you know that in 1871, the Paris Commune received more headlines in the United States Press than any other issue, save governmental corruption?) Other were pretty boring, like "The Paris Commune, and Marx's conception of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat".

And some were down right rot, like "Images of the Paris Commune in Contemporary Chinese Marxist Thought." I think any attempt to take the Cultural Revolution as a serious ideology is in itself a waste of paper, much less to attempt to relate it to the Paris Commune.

Most interesting for me were the reprinted primary sources. Such as an interview Marx gave to the New York World in July 1871. Or a defense of Gustave Courbet.

For me the best part of this book, which alone makes it worth picking up, is the complete text of Bertolt Brecht's play "The Days of the Commune". I'd often seen this play referenced, but never the whole text before. It's a short, but really great play.
